Propuesta: CONCEPT OF DESIGN: Time taking Form into Shape-Shifting Architecture
What if Time could materialize itself into Architecture and Art? It would not be static; its shape would continuously be changing. Time would become a living space of Shape-Shifting Architecture that continuously transforms itself into abstract forms from the natural world: Time taking Form.
The room proposal adapts its shape in respond to time during day and seasons.
1. Day: Solar Energy Charge: During the Day, Photovoltaic Panels fold to follow the sun's path, capturing energy and controlling sunlight.
2. Early Night: Forms and Color Schemes
2.1. Spring: Flower: In Spring, London appears in its most colorful beauty, when flowers bloom.
2.2. Summer: Olympic Fire: In Summer of 2012, London will be hosting the Olympic Games, this season its all about Heat and Sunshine.
2.3. Autumn: Brown Leaves Tree: In Autumn, London astonishes with brown and golden colors from the falling leaves.
2.4. Winter: Snow Pine Tree: In winter, London is upon the coldest season. A snow pine that could be illuminated as a Christmas tree.
3. Late Night: Rest Inside Cocoon: During the Night, lights are turned off, allowing visitors to rest and enjoy the starry sky projected inside.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN: Green Building that minimizes Carbon Footprint
A Climate study shows the behavior of the climate regarding humans comfort zone, has given us a clear understanding of the bioclimatic techniques that we need to use for the rooms design. Since the weathers temperature is below the comfort zone most of the year (18°-26°C), either passive solar design and insulation or passive solar design and thermal mass should be used.
Throughout the Solar Radiation Study we have determined the best orientation for the interior spaces and solar panels, capturing as much solar energy as possible. The bed is orientated directly to the south where the windows capture the most heat from the passive solar design and solar panels that are folded and oriented to follow the sun's path.
Recycled Materials: Building materials include: recycled steel, recycled glass, and recycled plastic lumber for all decks.
Green Roof: Roof garden, wastewater garden and container garden help to provide oxygen and temperature regulation.
Solar Panels: Foldable photovoltaic solar panels to generate and supply electricity from renewable energy.
Passive Solar Design: Windows and skylights capture solar heat and daylight to minimize the use of active mechanical systems.
Energy Efficiency: The lowest level is used to allocate energy efficient equipment combined with a high insulated double skin.
Rainwater Harvesting: Rainwater is collected and stored to be used in bathroom equipment and landscape irrigation.
Water Recycling: Grey water is treated in the wastewater garden and re-used for landscape irrigation.
EXTERIOR DESIGN: The Room transforms into Several Shapes
The Room for London exterior design is composed by an assembled Capsule surrounded by four Foldable Solar Panels made of fabric, photovoltaic cells and recycled steel. These lightweight panels can follow the solar path and control the light during the day and at different times of the year, besides being able to take many abstract forms of nature correspondently with the seasons. This cutting-edge Shape-Shifting Architecture uses RGB LEDs to change color and provide a more dramatic effect at night to fascinate Londoners and visitors alike.After 2012, the structure can be easily disassembled, aiming to transform it into a Modular Hotel.
INTERIOR DESIGN: Clear Space; all the furniture placed within the Walls
The Lighting in the interior will have a 360 IMAX projection so that the user can be on a totally different environment creating sensations never ever felt in a dorm room. This lighting concept has cutting-edge tools that will give the user the freedom to draw virtual navigation paths, lighting optimization with just one click.
The Space Concept and Innovating Ideas follow a pattern of sensations:
1. Nothing: Furniture Absence, Isolation, Personal Encounter.
2. Surprise: Emotional State, Unexpected Event, Spontaneity, Unique Experience.
3. Discovery: Finding, Exploration, Different Ambient, Spontaneous Movement.
4. Learning: Observation, Personal Development, Human-Environment Relationship, Knowledge Acquisition.
The Interior Design is conceived as a Clear Space; a White Capsule with all the furniture placed within the walls. The Kitchenette (2), integrated to the structure which by means of extensions it is also a table where you can sit and enjoy the views that offers. The Reading and Rest Area (3), provides a scope to admire the main sights of London. The Desktop (4), that unfolds from the structure and allowing the guest to work while enjoying the space and the views. The Shower (6), immersed in a window protected by one of the moving wings, the space between them renders a different feeling. The Jacuzzi (7), hidden in the floor, used integrated with the shower, creating a space for relaxation. The most important space confined in the room will be the Bed, Reading and Relaxation Area (8) orientated to the south to capture as much solar radiation available during the day and overlooking the Thames River. The Closet (9) uses a windows sized space as a personal belongings storage area. Floor (10) with traces engraved by art.
INTERIOR ART: Photography with Painting
The Traces Engraved on the floor represent the current season of the year, corresponding with the shape adapted by the outdoor solar panels at that time. The Artistic Disciplines of photography and painting are harmonically combined in each piece, without breaks or interruptions between them; created on a canvas, pre-textured with white putty, and coated with liquid photographic emulsion, projecting a black and white image. Once developed, the result is produced in oil and acrylic, respecting the photo-realistic subject, and thickening the brush stroke as we move away from it.
